Should I use preterite or imperfect (Spanish)?

"That night he slept on the couch in his mother's house. He went into her room just once and had a glance at the body. The next thing, first thing in the morning, the people from the funeral home came and took her away." I know you use imperfect with narratives but these sentences imply a time frame. Do I use preterite or imperfect?
