How did Martin Luther's teaching undermine the power of the clergy and traditional forms of piety?

Actually it didn't undermine anything. What he displayed in his teaching was the actual essence of what God's word personifies. In that violence is not the answer but through patience and understanding so much more can and will be accomplished. Turning the other cheek set the precedence for the civil rights struggle and ultimately displayed the utmost humble attitude for everyone to emulate.
