Is hand eczema life threatening?

I just discovered from my gp that my right hand palm has a half cm crack, cracks started appearing in the past few months. He termed it as eczema and have begun using advantan ointment today. What should I do to bid farewell. I'm in an industrial hardware trade and occupation demands dealing with metals and frequently with chemicals and rust ociated.
